Trafficking in Women: Moldova and Ukraine
Trafficking of women across national borders for the commercial sex industry is increasing at an alarming rate. Although the problem is centuries old, the United Nations and international aid agencies have responded to this recent increase, dedicating substantial resources to developing effective solutions.

The Constitution provides for a multiparty representative government with power divided among a president, cabinet, parliament, and judiciary. Parliamentary elections in 2001 were generally free and fair; however, authorities in the separatist Transnistria region interfered with the ability of residents there to vote. In 2001, the Parliament elected Communist Party leader Vladimir Voronin President.
