Is Growth Good Enough for the Poor?
Despite the fact that the economic evolution of the Republic of Moldova has not been too successful since it gained independence, it has been registering a positive growth beginning with the year 2000. Peculiarly enough, poverty remains to be a stringent problem despite the fact that we have been registering positive growth for four consecutive years.

Polling and monitoring specialists from the Center for Private Business Reform (CPBR) conducted interviews randomly throughout the country: 549 peasant farms, 230 limited liability firms, 32 production cooperatives and associations, and 12 jointstock companies (total 823 units) in 283 mayoralties (primarías).

Poverty in Moldova: a synthesis of literature
Many poverty lines are used by official and private agencies. The Poverty and Policy Monitoring Unit in Moldova (PPMU) uses the absolute poverty line in its reports (estimated for 2002 at 271 Moldovan Lei per month which was around 20 USD) and the extreme poverty line (212 MDL per month in 2002).
